Our contributor Adrienne Fung was recently invited to review the restaurant and was blown away by the unexpected and complex flavours of every dish. Nestled in two former office blocks, recreating a rather stoic space. The Mandrake Hotel in Fitzrovia has taken inspiration from the dishes and ingredients of South America for their new restaurant YOPO, opened earlier this year. Inspired by the medicinal properties of the plant after which it is named, this daring, unique and totally new hotel concept converted from a RIBA award-winning building on Newman Street, Fitzrovia, opened in September 2017. The marble-floored courtyard is the social hub, offering an appreciation of the whole environment. Behind the unassuming exterior lies sumptuous, surreal and theatrical flair. The Mandrake Hotel is an eccentric, vibrant, and artistic hotel located in Fitzrovia. The Mandrake is a luxurious boutique hotel set in the heart of Londons West End. Be sure to enjoy a meal at Yopo Restaurant, the onsite restaurant. Treat yourself to a body treatment or other spa services. The hotel’s sociable and convivial ethos is enhanced through the porosity of the spaces, a theatricality heightened by glimpsed and reflected views of spaces beyond, inviting further exploration. The Mandrake is located close to Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, and provides a roundtrip airport shuttle, a terrace, and an art gallery on site. Rooftop views of the neighbouring backlands and crevices of the West End give a sense of the world at one remove from the vantage of the hotel’s calm and highly sociable spaces, hidden deep within the urban block. The Mandrake (Italian: La Mandragola la mandraola) is a satirical play by Italian Renaissance philosopher Niccol Machiavelli. The client’s desire for an immersive environment is manifested in a heightened appreciation of the surrounding city. But their arrangement creates a spectacular and surprising internal world part of, but also distanced from the central London location. The materiality of the hotel is that of the surrounding city: brick, steel, concrete, timber, stone, plants. Five years in the making, and a first for the Fustok family, The Mandrake Hotel sits in a former Victorian office block and has been artfully converted into the cool, urban boutique hotel that it is today. This subterranean area includes antechambers, seating spaces and a black walled ‘anti-gallery’ and live performance space. Ten out of ten for location, you couldn’t be better placed to access all that London has to offer in terms of shopping, culture and all the bright lights of the big city. Secreted on the lower ground floor are WCs with a shared hand wash area equipped with specially designed hanging brass tubes that light the basins and provide warm running water. The Mandrake Hotel is located in the heart of London’s west end, in swanky Fitzrova, and is a stone’s throw from the city’s shopping mecca Oxford Street. ![]()
